5th Modernista Fair 2009 with 6th Street Trade Festival

· Where? Carrers Girona, Aragó i Diagonal
· When? From 22 to May 24th. 2009
· Days? Friday, Saturday, Sunday

This year 2009, we are celebrating the fifth edition of the Fair on 22, 23 and 24 May. We will also be visited for the first time by Alella Vinícola, a winery based in a Modernista building designed by Jeroni Martorell; the Turisme de Barcelona Consortium; Sueca Town Hall, which will be showing us its Modernisme, the work of local architects who fully exploited a time of increasing industrialisation; the emblematic Golondrinas boats, present in Barcelona’s harbour since 1888 and which will be carrying a roulette wheel where you can win a trip on a Golondrina; Palma de Mallorca City Council, promoting its Modernista heritage, such as Gaudí’s intervention in the city’s cathedral or the various Modernista buildings in its streets, and Riga City Council (capital of Latvia), a place with a rich heritage in the Jugendstilmetropole style.

There will also be the stands of the Barcelona Modernisme Route, Art Nouveau European Route, Bad Nauheim Town Council, Colonia Güell, autonomous city of Melilla, Casa Asia (housed in the Palau Baró de Quadras building) and La Pobla de Lillet’s Jardins Artigas.

The Fair’s magazine, available in tourist offices and Coreixample shops, will include an interview with Teresa-M. Sala, PhD in Art History, on the publication of her book entitled El Modernisme, part of the Artistic Heritage of Catalonia collection, as well as the article “Modernisme a Bad Nauheim, avui fa 100 anys” (Art Nouveau in Bad Nauheim, 100 Years Ago Today”, to mark the occasion of this German spa town’s second visit to the Fair. Do you want to visit Bad Nauheim? Come dressed in period costume and we will take a photo of you that you can keep for free in the photographer’s tent and you will automatically enter into a draw for a trip for two! You will also find information about the free visits offered by the Sagrada Família, 2-for-1 offer to visit the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, Güell Pavilions and Palau Montaner, as well as a special discount rate for Casa Batlló.

In Carrer Girona, between Mallorca and Avinguda Diagonal, we will once again install a large marquee with the usual vintage vehicles as well as two new features: an exhibition of a private collection of silent film posters and vintage projectors, and the premiere of the documentary Modernisme et société (Modernisme and Society) produced by the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, a non-profit association of European cities dedicated to promoting Art Nouveau.

The Sagnier Route, published by the Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape, will be presented in the Modernista building Casa Garriga Nogués, Francisco Godia Foundation, on Friday 22 May, and there will also be a talk given by the journalist Lluís Permanyer at the Círculo de Economía entitled “Cerdà’s Barcelona”. Also new this year will be an open-air, evening cinema on the corner of Girona and Aragón with the Nou Cinematògraf Napoleon, where you will be able to see, among others, the first film in the history of cinema: Workers Leaving The Lumière Factory in Lyon, filmed and screened by the Lumière brothers in 1895.

Saturday will also see some new events: a model train manned by the Association of Friends of the Hospitalet Railway will run along the side of Avinguda Diagonal from Bruc to Girona, which means you can come to the Fair on a steam train! And there will be gifts for children courtesy of the Railway Museum of Vilanova i la Geltrú. And for the first time we will have puppets at the Fair as part of a show entitled Duel de genis: Antoni Gaudí vs Ildefons Cerdà (A Duel of Geniuses: Antoni Gaudí vs Ildefons Cerdà), this year dedicated to Ildefons Cerdà to coincide with the celebration of the Cerdà Year.

Our pianola will return to the corner of Girona and Mallorca to bring some atmosphere and music to the Fair, and on the corner of Girona and València there will be an exhibition of wheelbarrows and tools from the early 20th century. There will also be giants, vintage games, demonstrations of old trades, a route through the Modernista vestibules in the buildings around the Fair and a series of leisure and cultural activities to take us back, if only for three days, to the years of Modernisme. Make sure you don’t miss out.
