Barcelona Modernista Fair

9th Barcelona Modernista Fair 2013

· Where? Carrers Girona, Aragó i Diagonal
· When? From May 31th to June 2nd. 2013
· Days? Friday, Saturday, Sunday

This year’s Fair, to be held from 31 May to 2 June, 2013, will be dedicated to the Casaramona Factory, designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and currently housing the headquarters of CaixaForum of Obra Social ”la Caixa”, to mark the centenary of the awarding of the Annual Prize for Artistic Buildings in 1913. We will therefore be offering the talk “The restoration of the Casaramona Factory” at the District’s offices on Friday, detailing the work done from 1998 to 2001 by the architect in charge, Francisco Javier Asarta. In the Fair’s magazine, you will find an interview where the architect will also talk about the special qualities of this building and the restoration that he directed.

The 9th edition of the Fair is also packed with novelties. One on wheels, the 1st cavalcade of vintage cars, with the collaboration of the Clàssic Motor Club from Bages and Garaje Terramar. The vintage vehicles will be on display on Saturday and Sunday at the Fair, except when they head off on a tour through the streets of the city, passing in front of La Pedrera, the so-called “Block of Discord”, Casa Batlló, Sagrada Família and Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site. Come and see how they start their engines!

As for the stands this year, the Barcelona Provincial Council will come for the first time to promote Modernisme in the province, as well as Palau Güell, owned by this government body; Barcelona City Council, and the Bishopric of Astorga (León), where Antoni Gaudí built its Episcopal Palace and renovated the cloister of the Diocesan Seminary, will set up the stand “Astorga, 100 years of Gaudí”; while the Alcoy tourism board will show us the Modernisme in this town in the Valencian Community, the result of industrial growth and the investment of a wealthy bourgeoisie. The other stands will be those of the Barcelona Modernisme Route, Art Nouveau European Route, Museum of Catalan Modernisme, Turisme de Barcelona, Casa Elizalde Civic Centre, Riga City Council (Latvia), Casa Asia-Palau Baró de Quadras House, autonomous city of Melilla, Badalona City Council, AGBAR Water Museum and Tomàs Balbey Archive Museum in Cardedeu.

Another novelty is the exhibition of a collection of automatons owned by an individual, Lluís Ribas, under the title Els autòmats al Modernisme. Un refinament importat de França (Automatons in Modernisme: a refinement imported from France), located in a marquee on Carrer Girona, between Mallorca and València, with guided tours on all three days.

For the first time, we will have the activity group La Llanterna de Terrassa Cultural Association, whose members will be in period costume at the Fair to present El casament modernista (Modernista wedding), a short performance with a touch of humour of a well-to-do bourgeois wedding in the early 20th century.

The 3rd Bike Ride this year will be sponsored by Els 4 Gats, who will be offering a hot chocolate for each person participating and many prizes to be given away among the riders too.
