Barcelona Virtual Modernista Fair 2021

The Barcelona Modernista Fair returns in a virtual format for 2021, but with even more activities than last year.

The Fair is dedicated to the multifaceted artist Alexandre de Riquer (Calaf, 3 May 1856 – Palma de Mallorca, 13 November 1920), acknowledged as a total artist because he cultivated various art forms, specifically painting, drawing and engraving, although he was also a designer of posters and bookplates, worked as a decorator and is also known for his work as a writer.

In this edition, you will be able to enjoy a talk dedicated to his work by the curator of the Alexandre de Riquer Year, Teresa Costa-Gramunt (watch video), thereby helping you to explore his diverse oeuvre. In addition, the album of stickers for the Fair, which this year will be distributed in the neighbourhood shop members of CorEixample, is dedicated to his various artistic facets. Its aims to ensure that his work also reaches children, with the novelty that whoever completes the album of stickers will win last year’s album, which was dedicated to the writer, journalist and feminist Dolors Monserdà and which could not be distributed due to the restrictions because of Covid-19.

Check the programme for the various activities that will be held, such as the performance of the group Descabelladas, with some examples of the artist’s poetry, or the videos that Modernista entities have lent us to showcase their heritage without you having to leave home.

But the real novelty this year is the 1st Jocs Florals, or Floral Games, of the Barcelona Modernista Fair, held in homage to Dolores Monserdà, the first woman president of the Jocs Florals in 1909. They are open to everyone and organised by CorEixample, the Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape, Llar Llúria and the schools of Escolàpies Llúria, Madre del Divino Pastor Bailén, La Concepción and Sagrat Cor-Diputació. The competition’s rules can be consulted on this website and you can participate by uploading your work. Only works written in Catalan will be accepted, as was the case during the Jocs Florals of the time. We look forward to receiving your creations. Good luck!
